12 Videos that Make You Want to Explore the World

by Steve Scott | Join Him On Facebook

Growing up, I used to love watching videos on MTV. (You know before they stopped playing videos) My favorite type was always the ones that showed the musician(s) in an exotic location doing something cool, while playing a song.

The funny thing is I really haven’t changed much as an adult. I still love the type of songs that captivate the imagination…videos that make you want to pack a suitcase and hop a plane to a foreign destination.

So in honor of this, I’d like to list twelve of my personal favorite “traveling” videos. Some of the connections are obvious. But some remind me of a particular moment in my own life.

(Sorry … because of stupid copyright laws, you have to watch some of these on other sites):

#1- Rio by Duran Duran

Back before I realized that ‘boy-bands’ get their stardom by making a deal with the devil, I was a big fan of Duran Duran. My favorite of theirs was Rio. Who doesn’t want to hop on a sailboat and cruise around a tropical paradise?

Watch it on YouTube

#2- Africa by Toto

Here’s another video that captured my imagination as a kid…Africa. Seriously, watching this clip made me want to be archeologist (like Indiana Jones) and explore a hidden part of the world.

#3- Kokomo by The Beach Boys

This is the ultimate song about sitting on a warm, sunny beach and enjoying life. I have no idea where Kokomo is…but that’s where I want to go.

Watch it on DailyMotion

#4- Road to Nowhere by Talking Heads

Continuing our 80’s theme, we come to Road to Nowhere. Both the song and video make me want to hop in a car and drive to wherever the wind takes me. Watch this video and see if you feel any different.

#5- Fast Car by Tracy Chapman

We all have those moments where we wish for a better life. But nobody sings about it better than Tracy Chapman in Fast Car. While this is a very basic video, I’ve always loved Tracy’s yearning lyrics about escaping from a dead-end existence.

#6- Today by Smashing Pumpkins

This is another video that’s not related to the lyrics. However, Today is a great tune about seizing the day and getting the most out of it.

#7-I Will Possess Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie

I Will Possess Your Heart is the video that inspired this post. If you ignore the “obsessive stalker” lyrics, this clip shows eight minutes of a girl traveling all over the world and looking lost in contemplation. For some reason, it really struck a chord with me… I pretty much watched it non-stop before I left om my trip to Europe.

#8- Love Generation by Bob Sinclair

I found Love Generation to be a really clever video… It’s just a boy on his bike cycling all over the place.

Watch it onYouTube

#9- We Are the People by Empire of the Sun

We Are the People is definitely a weird. It has two guys in strange outfits, singing and dancing in the Australian Outback. But it also makes me want to visit The Land Down Under.

#10- America by Simon and Garfunkel

Okay, America was made before MTV existed, so technically this isn’t a video. But I still think it’s worth a mention here. This is a simple song about traveling with a loved-one on a long road trip. Bonus points because it mentions New Jersey.

#11- California Girl by Katy Perry w/Snoop Dogg

I feel like I should put a modern song somewhere in this list. This one is chosen simply because Katy Perry is really attractive. And her lyrics do invoke some imagery of being someplace better:

I know a place

Where the grass is really greener

Warm, wet and wild

There must be something in the water

Sippin’ gin and juice

Laying underneath the palm trees

#12- Breathe Me by Sia (The “Six-Feet Under” Clip)

This isn’t the official video of Breathe Me. So why’d I choose it? Well, this was shown in the series finale to the show, “Six Feet Under.” (If you plan on watching the series then it’s a bit of spoiler…so don’t watch it.) Anyway, I chose it because: 1. It’s my favorite ending to any T.V. show and 2) It reminds you that we only have an finite amount of time on this earth so might as well make the most of it.

What are your favorites?

Hey Steve,

Fast car…by Tracy Chapman is one of my personal favorites….

Love your list..

Steve Scott

Thanks Adam,

It has always been a song I like too. A little melancholy and sad, but ultimately full of hope.

Thanks for dropping by and dropping a comment.

Hey Steve,

Love the videos – I occasionally get into these ‘modes’ where I watch timelapse videos of NYC, Tokyo and other major metropolitan areas; really makes me want to push hard in all of the work I do so I can visit these places regularly.

I do have one I’d like to add – this is more of a ‘life’ experience thingie:

Extrawelt – Soopertrack

Uses video from Planet Earth and other vids like Koyanisqaatsi (spelling?); plus I love electronic 😛

Lynnivere

Yummm.. these are good!

Since I enjoy internal travel as much as outbound.. I give you Depeche Mode’s “World In My Eyes” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhZdL4JlnxI

Steve Scott

Definitely a sub-text theme of good music videos coming from the late 80’s – early 90’s. So of course Depeche Mode fits right in! 🙂

Hi Steve,

You just gave me an idea to make a playlist for today. Sweet! Thanks so much. I’ll be enjoying my weekend with this. If you continue with posts like these, I’m sure I’ll have more enterfun. As for my contribution, Carly Commando’s piece in Noah’s a picture a day, always seems to transcend time. Eerie but it’s going somewhere. Check it out!

Just watched it. It is funny how it really sucks you in. I admit I was captivated watching a guy I don’t know age slowly before my my eyes. I kept thinking a few things while watching it. I kept thinking a few things while watching it

1. What great dedication that took. A picture every day for 6 years, though a simple task, is no small feat.
2. The precision it took to have his face in “just the right place” for every shot
3. How often did that guy change his hairstyle.

Thanks for the comment Thu

Murray,

That was a pretty cool video showing the planet. I was going to add it as a “late entry” but it was being persnickety and didn’t want to embed.

Kind of reminded me of a video I thought of including, but wasn’t sure if it fit the theme. Most people have probably seen it since it is one of the all time top Youtube videos (and there are three in the series now i think)

They are all the videos of a guy names Matt doing a funky dance around the world.

I love that you included the Katie Perry song! Being a Cali girl it has been my summer anthem and even though I live here, it makes me want to travel to the beach! 🙂

Steve Scott

It is a very upbeat and “fun” song. It is hard to beat the song for pure Energy! I am pretty much a fan of most of Katy Perry’s song. She seems to have that fun and quirky sensibility.

Thanks for the comment. 🙂

lawmacs

nice list you put together here steve and number five is one of my all time favourites “Fast Cars” by tracey chapman.

Steve Scott

Yeah, that really is a beautiful song skirting the boundary between being sad but hopeful in the end. Good Stuff.

Jennifer Barry

This is a fun one, Steve. I actually put a quote from America on one of my blog posts last month: “Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike,
They’ve all gone to look for America.”

I haven’t heard Fast Car in a long time, really brings me back. If you haven’t heard it yet, I highly recommend listening to Perpetuum Jazzile’s a capella version of Africa. They even do the synth and drum parts!

Steve Scott

That actually sounds like it could be pretty good. I like a cappella when it is done well, and that see,s like it could be a good song for it. Will have to check it out
